01/05/03. Maybe the news about SARS so far have
not been exhaustive. We tried to look for scientific reports, and
here is what we found. Anybody can consider this critically.
A mild influenza can kills in a year 250,000 people around the world.
Malaria kills almost 3,000 persons per day, mostly children. In one
month SARS killed 252 in all the world. Let's multiply this number
times 12 months, let's double it (admitting that the worse still have
to come), let's make it 10 times greater: we will always be well below
the number of deaths produced by a mild influenza. We cannot make
a comparison with malaria: but malaria is diffused in many countries
where we usually go, as tourists. Nobody stops travelling for this.
People affected by SARS can heal: 94% of the people that took the
virus recovered.
Now a question: why the media have inflated this new, enhancing a
unmotivated fear toward a disease (according with numbers) kills less
than influenza? Is it only for the sales, or is this part of a game
that we do not understand fully?
Another thing: will the Asian tourist operators, dead by starvation
due to the touristic block, be counted amongst the people dead due
to SARS?
